Palestinian Muslims celebrated the beginning of Ramadan Saturday in the Gaza Strip, which is under a brutal military embargo imposed by the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Israel has occupied Palestine since 1948, including militarily occupying the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in 1967. To prevent further military losses, Israel withdrew its military occupation forces from the Gaza Strip in 2005 but imposed even more harsh embargo restrictions on the Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip by imposing a tight military border control.

Despite the harsh environment and constant terrorist attacks from Israel, Palestinian Muslims found time to enjoy the celebration of one of Islam’s holiest religious holidays, Ramadan.

Ramadan represents the revelation of the Quran (Koran) to the Prophet Mohammed (Muhammad) and is commemorated by a month of fasting from dawn until dusk.

Food and drinks are served daily, before dawn and after sunset, referred to as Suhoor in the morning and Iftar in the evening.

Here are photos of Palestinian Muslims in the Gaza Strip commemorating the start of Ramadan.
