DC group pushing for national month for Arab Heritage to be in April
Online website ArabAmerica.com based in Washington D.C. and community activists are pushing to designate one month as a national heritage month for Arab Americans. Currently, Arab Heritage Month is celebrated during different months in different states including in November for Illinois
U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clark, Numerous Dignitaries to Attend National Arab American Heritage Month Kick-off April 12th in Washington DC, officials at the website ArabAmerica.com announced Tuesday April 10, 2018.
A press conference will be held on Thursday, April 12th, where ArabAmerica.com will kick-off National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM) with a special reception at WeWork White House, 1440 G St. NW, Washington DC 20005 from 6:30-8:30pm. The program commences at 7:00pm.
During the month of April, ArabAmerica.com will formally recognize the achievements of Arab Americans through the celebration of NAAHM. Across the country, cultural institutions, school districts, public servants, and Arab Americans will engage in special events that celebrate our community’s rich heritage and numerous contributions to society.
At the kick-off event on Wednesday, U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clark (MI) representing Brooklyn’s Ninth Congressional District (NY), will give remarks, in addition to numerous dignitaries from Capitol Hill, and the DC area leadership.
During a time of heightened hate crimes, bigotry, and misunderstanding towards the Arab American community, it is more imperative than ever to use education and information sharing to embrace our culture, dispel stereotypes, and empower the next generation of Arab American trailblazers.
As part of our month-long celebration, Arab America has been asking legislators, city councils, and school board members to issue NAAHM proclamations and adopt our NAAHM curriculum kit. The curriculum kit highlights the history of Arab migration to America, geographic understanding of the Arab world, Arab American diversity in faith and language, interesting customs and traditions, issues affecting our community, and our many achievements in business, politics, education, and more.
Arab America President Warren David stated, “For over one hundred years, Arab Americans have made significant contributions to the diverse mosaic of America.” He went on to say, “We are pleased to report that we have reached more than 1,500 school superintendents throughout the U.S. and now more than ever we need to overcome the hate which permeates our country at this critical time.”
