New Book: “The Making of a Palestinian Suicide Bomber” by Author Mitri I. Musleh analyzes why suicide bombings exist, how to stop them

They make the international news all the time, and yet they’re still an enigma to Western culture. The world became more accustomed to suicide bombers after the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, but we still seem to not really understand how someone could be crazy enough to do it.

Mitri I. Musleh, originally from Palestine, recently released his new book, “The Making of a Palestinian Suicide Bomber,” as an informative, research-backed book on one of the most tragic acts of violence in modern warfare.

“I challenge the common belief that suicide bombing is a religiously driven apparatus and hope to explain the political surroundings that would lead to the creation of a suicide bomber,” Musleh said. “The solution to the problem is based on using humanitarian and behaviorist psychological theories to resolve complex political issues.”

Musleh uses his academic background in psychology, political science and social work to provide a history of Palestine and Israel relations and reasons why suicide bombers exist. If we understand why these individuals are acting, we can better understand how to prevent it from happening again.

“Suicide bombers are not born with the thought of committing murderous acts of terror, they are driven by political circumstances that robbed them from being equal contributing members of society,” Musleh said. “If we capture the gift of listening to others, we may be able to better understand why these people choose to take their life while taking the lives of other innocent victims. Listening could lead to better understanding of life’s occurrences in general and may lead us to respect and accept one another as contributing and equal members of society.”
