Life For Relief & Development, a Muslim American Charity, joined the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to collect and distribute Thanksgiving meals to hundreds of families in the Greater Detroit Region.
The mission was to provide enough food for people to pack for two weeks and serve more than 400 individuals in the Detroit area. The meals include turkey, boxed mashed potatoes and stuffing, and everything a family needs to have a good Thanksgiving feast.
The Life organization has been distributing meals yearly in different locations around Michigan, and it’s their first time being in Detroit. Also, they will have more food distribution on December 15 at Dearborn and Macomb County. Life has been working with social services and school to find people in need and try to contact prior to each meals distribution. Around 40 to 60 individuals showed up for the Thanksgiving meals.
Other than Detroit area, the Life organization also provide pre-assembled boxes that can be delivered to people’s houses. These individuals had to be pre-selected after presenting a document that shows their need.
Life For Relief & Development has been a critical source for people who face poverty, hunger, social and economic disturbance, natural disasters, war, and other tragedies. Also, they assist people globally by providing services such as food, water, and temporary shelter, healthcare, and education. “Life is dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to people regardless of race, gender, religion and cultural background with an annual budget of over $50 million,” according to organization website.
The Thanksgiving distribution program is only in Michigan and will extend nationally in the future.
Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries at the other hand provide four days a week food distribution, Monday through Friday except for Thursday, to help people in need. They collect most of their food from Gordon Food Service Store and individual donation. Many of the staffs that work there are volunteering and has been doing it for years to serve the Detroit community.
“This is the only one I know of that takes care of people. They let you pick whatever you want,” an individual at the warehouse said.
