Please, read the following urgent message from His Beautitude Patriarch JOHN X and the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese in North America regarding the falling asleep of His Eminence Metropolitan PHILIP. Dear Brothers in Christ:
I communicate with you with a heavy heart as we struggle with the news of the falling asleep in Christ of Metropolitan PHILIP. May his Memory be Eternal!
I send this email with the blessing of Archbishop JOSEPH.
His Beatitude Patriarch JOHN X has told us that he intends to be with us for the funeral and the Sunday Divine Liturgy.
1. Attached you will find two letters from His Beatitude Patriarch JOHN X, both the Arabic original and an English translation.
Both Letters appoint Metropolitan SILOUAN of Buenos Aires and all Argentina as the
Patriarchal Vicar until such time as a new Metropolitan is elected by the Holy Synod of Antioch.
The Patriarchal Vicar is responsible for the administration of the Archdiocese until a new Metropolitan is elected.
Archbishop JOSEPH will serve as the Locum Tenens of the Archdiocese.
Archbishop JOSEPH will arrive on Friday March 21, and Metropolitan SILOUAN will arrive on Monday March 24.
2. Effective immediately and until the election of a new Metropolitan, all clergy of this Archdiocese are instructed to commemorate His Beatitude JOHN, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East during divine services
as follows: Great Entrance “Our father and Patriarch JOHN and our bishop (name), the Lord God remember them in His Kingdom always now and ever and unto ages of ages”
Also during the Great Entrance, the first name that is commemorated among the departed will be His Eminence Metropolitan Philip as follows “Our father and Metropolitan Philip”.
The remembrance of Metropolitan PHILIP will be done for 40 days which ends on Sunday April 27.
For the Great Ektenia “Our father and Patriarch JOHN and our bishop (name), for the venerable priesthood, etc.”. After the Megalynarion “Among the first be mindful O Lord of our Father and Patriarch JOHN,
and our bishop (name),whom do thou grant unto thy holy churches etc.”
3. The schedule for all events associated with the falling asleep of Metropolitan PHILIP is as follows (please note that purple vestments are to be worn for all services)
You will shortly receive a schedule of services with the clergy who are designated to serve at each one.
All events will be held at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Brooklyn, New York unless another location is specified:
– Monday March 24 – 7:00 p.m. Great Vespers for the Feast of the Annunciation
– Tuesday March 25 – 9:30 Orthros, 10:30 Liturgy for the Feast of the Annunciation
– Wednesday March 26 – Viewing at the Cathedral from 1:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts
12 noon – receive the body of His Eminence into the Cathedral with the Trisagion prayers
Great Compline at 7:00 p.m.
Trisagion Prayers at various times through the day.
– Thursday March 27 – Viewing at the Cathedral from 1:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m.
Great Compline at 7:00 p.m.
Trisagion Prayers at various times through the day.
– Friday March 28 – Viewing at the Cathedral from 1:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m.
Akathist Service at 4:00 p.m.
Funeral Service for the bishop at 7:00 p.m.
Trisagion Prayers at various times through the day.
– Saturday March 29 – Divine Liturgy from 9:00 – 10:30 followed by the Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m.
Meal of Mercy for hierarchs and other invited guests offsite
– Sunday March 30 – Orthros at 9:15 a.m., Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. followed by Trisagion Prayers
– Monday March 31 – 12 noon – Burial at the Antiochian Village (same area as the tomb of St. Raphael).
