Democratic Party Endorsements June 28, 2022: Congressional and Statewide offices: Democrats

The Arab Daily News polled its 3,682 followers asking them who they supported in the June 28, 2022 Democratic Primary elections. The following are endorsements by The Arab Daily News, based on our subscriber poll. Click here to view the Endorsements in Cook County.

Gilbert Villegas. Gilbert Villegas has proven his concern for Arab Americans speaking out against the discriminatory practices of Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot who has targeted Arab American and Muslim businesses in a twisted and failed effort to confront rising street gang related crime and homicides. Villegas has promised that the needs of Arab Americans will be fully addressed and they will have equal access to his office as Congressman. Villegas was the ONLY official to stand up in this race in support of Arab American businesses and he deserves our support. No other candidate spoke out in support of Arab American Arab Business owners who were targeted by racist chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Susana Mendoza: Susana Mendoza has been the state’s most effective Comptroller, pushing office efficiency and eliminating the payment backlog for contracts businesses and services. She is also an effective speaker and spokesperson for the State of Illinois.

Michael Porfirio: Mike Porfirio has along association with the new 11th senate district and works with all of the district’s government officials. He will ensure that every community gets the represenation and services they deserve.

State Rep. 7th District
Emanuel “Chris” Welch: No one has been more attentive to the needs of the state than Illinois House Speaker and State Representative Emanuel “Chris” Welch. Welch is supporting efforts to ensure that Arab Americans, Christian and Muslim, are treated equally and fairly just like everyone else. Arab Americans have never asked for favoritism. They have only asked to be included and treated the same as everyone. Welch has repeatedly shown he agrees. Welch is also endorsed by the American Arab Chamber of Commerce.

State Rep. 21st District
Abdelnasser Rashid: Abdelnasser Rashid is a formidable candidate who has the endorsement of the Arab American Democratic Club and other Arab American organizations. He was the only oen of two candidates in the race to attend and speak to and address the concerns of the Arab American community.
Michael Zalewski: Incumbent State Rep.Mike Zalewski has been a supporter of the Arab American community rights consistently, but could be a stronger voice.

State Rep. 32nd District
Cyril Nichols: State Rep. Cyril Nichols has introduced legislation to recognize Arab Americans as a minority group in order to allow them to compete for billions of dollars in state contracts that otherwise would be out of their reach. This is an important step in ensuring that Arab Americans are treated equally and fairly, and that Arab American businesses receive equal access to state contracts. Cyril is also endorsed by the American Arab Chamber of Commerce.

Nick Kantas: Nick Kantas is an experienced litigator dedicated to public service and the people of Cook County for the past 17 years. A prosecutor for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, he has tried hundreds of complex cases, including homicide, robbery, rape, child abuse and financial crimes.  As a prosecutor, Nicholas has been a forceful advocate for the rights of victims, whose voices he ensured were heard in the courtroom.

ShawnTe Raines-Welch: ShawnTe Raines Welch has twelve years of litigation experience in over ten areas of law including personal injury, civil rights, contracts, municipal law, school law, land use, administrative review and labor and employment law. She currently serves as general counsel for multiple Illinois municipalities and suburban school districts.  ShawnTe manages a team of litigation associates and currently oversees over 60 cases.  As general counsel, ShawnTe provides guidance and direction to clients regarding employment decisions, policy-making, ordinance drafting, administrative hearings, collective bargaining, contracts, and labor arbitrations.  She has defended claims filed with the Illinois Department of Human Rights, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Federal District Court pursuant to Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination Employment Act, and claims arising from constitutional violations pursuant to 42 U.S.C. §1983.
