Iran’s extremism is empowered by Palestinian suffering

This column I wrote in the Arab News examines one of the main factors that empower Iran. Israel’s refusal to make peace and America’s support of Israel’s extremist government.
Americans like outgoing United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, one of the most despicable human beings on the planet, made a name for herself by denouncing Iran but in reality she was Iran’s biggest enabler at the United Nations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also exploits Iran for his own interests, denouncing Iran and making threats. But the reality is Israel fears a full-scale military engagement with Iran and its proxy militia Hezbollah which beat Israel so badly in the IDF-Hezbollah war that Israel was forced to declare a truce. After Israel launched a missile attack showering civilian areas with missiles in the ware that began on July 12 and ended on August 14, 2006, Hezbollah responded with a storm of missiles that slammed Israel’s offensive units.
Hezbollah remains one of Israel’s greatest threats next only to Hamas. Ironically, Israel helped create Hamas in the 1970s (not knowing it would turn into a powerful militant group) and its violence against Palestinians is empowering Iran everyday.

The failure to push Israel’s government to accept a just peace and end its occupation of Palestine and oppression of Palestinian rights has empowered extremist regimes, including and especially Iran.
Tehran thrives on the fact that Palestinians suffer and uses every aspect of that suffering to strengthen its network of extremist allies.
By scorning peace with the Palestinians, Israel is steadily fueling the Islamic Republic’s growing strength.
