In the Arabic language, the word “Adel” means “just/fair”. Adel Makki has not only lived up to the meaning of his name, but has gone above and beyond, believing that it is not simply fair to help those in need, but a conscious priority.

He lives by a “pay it forward” philosophy, helping students achieve their educational goals, as he believes that today’s students are the cause of future prosperity within our community. This community has always been good to Adel and holds a special place in his heart, as he has called it home since infancy.

Adel never forgot the promise he made to himself as he recently created a 1.2 million dollar endowment at Ferris State University in the name of the Dr. Adel A. Makki Scholarship Endowment. That endowment has helped countless Ferris State Pharmacy students from his community attend pharmacy school.

Adel immigrated from Lebanon with his parents when he was just two weeks old. His parents settled in Dearborn, Michigan because they felt it provided a good combination of the new American Dream they sought with the familiar culture of the beloved Lebanon they left behind. Both teachers, they raised Adel and his brother and sister to value education highly. Adel is a proud product of Dearborn Public Schools, which he attended from kindergarten-12th grade.

Adel’s education in Dearborn did not stop in grade 12 however. After his graduation from Fordson High School in 1995, he attended Henry Ford Community College, then earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Adel then attended Ferris State University for Pharmacy School, earning many scholarships to help fund his pharmacy education.

Grateful to the scholarship donors, Adel made a promise to himself to come back and become one of them. In 2005, Adel earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy from Ferris State, graduating with top honors. After graduation he began his pharmaceutical career working in a long-term care pharmacy, where he still works. Today, Adel resides in Dearborn Heights with his wife and two daughters.

Over the years, Adel has received many spoken words and letters of gratitude from the students who have been awarded his scholarship, and his response is always the same: He reminds them he was not born successful. He was simply a student who worked hard, and had people who believed in his potential jumpstart his journey along the way to success. Today, for so many students he is that jumpstart, and he tells them one day when they are successful not to forget that just because their educational journey is over, the fair thing to do is to “pay it forward” and help another student just beginning theirs.
