Detroit civil rights group files suit against Trump immigration
Today (Tuesday), January 31, 2017, the Arab-American Civil Rights League (ACRL) will hold a press conference at the Theodore Levin Federal Courthouse to announce today’s filing of a federal lawsuit on behalf of several of its members challenging the constitutionality of President’s Trump’s executive order.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court – Eastern District of Michigan, alleges that the order is unconstitutional because it bans Muslims and Arabs from Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The named Plaintiffs are individuals who are lawful permanent residents of the United States and citizens of one of the seven countries subject to the ban in Trump’s executive order. While lawsuits have been filed and stays granted, the ACRL files this suit to demand lawful permanent residents, who were denied boarding at foreign airports, be permitted to return to the United States.
The ACRL strongly opposes these actions as they are designed to target immigrant communities and are disgracefully timed during an urgent humanitarian crisis. We have committed to take action as we witness the demoralization of our Founding Articles and hold the President accountable for defending the Constitution of the United States of America.
Chairman Nasser Beydoun stated, “If you are truly the Commander in Chief, then be a commander in chief for all Americans, regardless of their faith. If the President will not preserve the values of our nation, then we will.”
Attending the conference in support will be ACRL representatives, attorneys, family members of Plaintiffs, and numerous community organizations and dignitaries.
