There are more than 32 million Arabs in South America with the largest settlement in Brazil, more than 12 million Arabs from Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. There are more than 1.6 million Arabs in Venezuela, and 1.8 million in Colombia. Most came to South America after World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, fleeing Western persecution as the West subjugated and then divided into political nations many of today’s nations. A huge surge of Arabs followed during and after Israel’s war against Christians and Muslims in Palestine and the Levant region in the 1930s and 1940s, and again in 1967 after Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, Gaza, Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights.

Wars in Syria and Lebanon also fueled Palestinian flight to South America where may Arab communities welcomed them.

South American nations were welcoming and supportive of the Arab people, and many with only a few exceptions have supported Arab rights in Syria, Lebanon and in Palestine.

Many online publications have only skimmed the surface of Arabs living in South American, and the Arab communityin South America is often marginalized or ignored by the Arab World, as the Arab World often ignores and marginalizes the Arab American community. But, Arabs in South America and North America have achieved power through the building of successful businesses and by assimilating into South American government and society.

The son of Lebanese migrants son Michel Temer served as Brazil’s president. He is the son of two immigrants who came to Bracil from Btaaboura, which is 70 KM north of Beirut. They settled in São Paulo in 1925, according to published reports.

The main street of Btaaboura, which has a population of only 300 people, had been previously  renamed in President Temer’s honor when he was serving as Brazil’s vice-president.

An Arab was elected president of Argentina, Carlos Menem, in 1989 and served until 1999. An Arab was elected president of Ecuador, Abdalá Bucaram, in 1996 and served until 1997. Arab Ecuadoran Jamil Mahuad served as president of Ecuador from 1998 until 2000.

El Salvador elected an Arab as president in 2004, Elías Antonio Saca,  who served until 2009. And Honduras elected an Arab president, Carlos Flores Facussé, in 1998. Facusse served until 2002. Julio César Turbay, who was elected president of Colombia in 1978 and served until 1982, was also from the Arab world.

In Central America, Carlos Slim, the son of Lebanese migrants and the sixth wealthiest person in the world according to Forbes, built his empire in Mexico City.

Hanania will discuss these and other immigrants during the radio show and take calls from listeners who have relatives living in South America.
