The American Human rights Council (AHRC) welcomes the publishing of the 26 Global Report on Fighting Impunity prepared by International Rehabilitation Center that was released on Monday September 29, 2014.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed June 26 as the annual “International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.” The proclamation was adopted in a resolution and recognized as a Universal Convention against the use of Torture.

AHRC takes this occasion to affirm the basic human right of every individual to personal dignity and equal protection as a human being, prevention and eradication of torture, end to the inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment that torture represents. The United Nations has condemned and outlawed torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings.

According to a press release by the IRCT (International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims) issued on Monday, September 29, 2014: “[m]ore than 140 member organizations that treat nearly 100,000 victims per year in more than 70 countries, the IRCT has a unique access to the world of torture and rehabilitation of torture victims. Contact us for an interview, for testimonies of torture survivors, or write us your questions about torture, rehabilitation and the prevention of torture. This year’s theme “Fighting Impunity” was emphasized through peaceful demonstrations, press conferences, concerts, radio shows, panel discussions and many other events. Reaching thousands of people across the globe, the IRCT and the participating organizations sent a message of support to survivors of torture and a clear call to end impunity.”

“As the global umbrella organization for 144 rehabilitation centers in 70 countries, the IRCT is committed to marking the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The 26 June Global Report provides information about the activities that take place worldwide in connection with 26 June and IRCT’s role in promoting the day” .

AHRC is a proud supporter and a member of this global effort towards a world of justice and a world free of torture.
“AHRC is alarmed by the increase in incidents of torture worldwide. The use of torture as a political tool of repression undermines the fight for fundamental human rights, and is a breeding group for violence and extremism” said Imad Hamad AHRC Action Director. “Torture is a crime against humanity and people’s human dignity must be protected and preserved. Torture must stop and the perpetrators of this crime must be brought to justice” stated Mr. Hamad.
