Danny Glover will present AAI Lifetime Achievement Award
Famed actor, producer, humanitarian and lifelong activist Danny Glover will present the Award for Lifetime Achievement to former Mayor Gus Newport at the Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala on May 2, 2019.
Mr. Glover graced the silver screen in classic films including “Places in the Heart,” “The Color Purple,” the “Lethal Weapon” seriesand “To Sleep with Anger,” among many other iconic film, television, and theatre performances throughout his 35-year career in show business. Long before making waves on our screens, though, he was a student at San Francisco State University in California, where, as a member of the school’s Black Student Union, he was among the student organizers who trail-blazed the path for diversity in higher education during the late 1960s. The culmination of these efforts included the establishment of the first school of ethnic studies in U.S. higher education. His friendship with our awardee, former Berkeley Mayor Eugene “Gus” Newport, goes all the way back to those early days of activism and organizing. AAI is so delighted to bring these two leaders together in the “Spirit of Humanity” that they share and spread across the globe through their work.
Danny Glover has shaped his career to match his values and convictions by actively creating the possibility for more diverse representation in Hollywood. The production company he co-founded, Louverture Films, “pro-actively supports the employment and training of cast and crew from communities of color in the United States.”
Throughout his professional life, Danny Glover has fought for local communities and remained active in politics and community building in California. The recipient of numerous awards for acting as well as his humanitarian and advocacy efforts on behalf of economic and social justice causes, Glover is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Amnesty International.
