Summer Photography camp helps kids see world

Two week-long camps set; need-based scholarships available

The Arab American National Museum (AANM) is gearing up for another summer season of youth exploration and enrichment of artistic talent through the SURA Arts Academy 2017 Summer Camps.

The award-winning program equips students with the necessary training and tools to learn new skills, meet friends, work with educators and encounter people in various walks of lives.

For summer 2017, two separate, equivalent camps are offered, from July 17 -21, 2017, and July 31 -August 4, 2017. Instruction led by professional photographers takes place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. A maximum of 20 students is allowed per camp.  Registration is open through 5 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017.

The program, a 2008 winner of the Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee on Arts and the Humanities, offers students ages 10-15 an opportunity to develop digital photography skills and learn to interact with their increasingly diverse world.

The curriculum entails a variety of visual presentations, photographic and writing assignments, discussion, critiques, guest artist visits and daily field trips. Using photography and AANM’s digital Community History Lab, students will tell stories about their lives, community and culture.

During the summer camps, students develop skills in composition, color, lighting, image, storytelling and social media sharing. As students look through the camera lens, they will develop self-awareness and respect toward others, and an idea of how they fit into the broader community.

Zeinab Farhat, a SURA student, says that the program has given her a new perspective in photography that she will carry with her as she pursues work in the field.

“My experience at SURA really helped me perceive photography in a new light,” Farhat says.  “I had the honor to learn different types of fields in photography including portraiture and photojournalism.”

Each year, AANM features SURA students’ work in its Student Photography Exhibition. SURA Summer Camp 2017 works are slated for display at AANM in the Spring 2018.

Registration for SURA Arts Academy 2017 Summer Camps is available on AANM’s website for $150 for Museum Members and $180 for general public. Scholarships are available and will be awarded based on financial need and program availability.

All sessions are based at The Annex @ AANM and will include off-site daily field trips. Point-and-shoot digital cameras are provided for each student. Students much bring a bagged lunch; pizza will be served on the final day of instruction.
