Syria and Ukraine sessions, and keynote speakers added to ASIL-ILA joint Conference

Some sessions streamed live; 2014 Book Awards announced

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Society of International Law (ASIL) and the American Branch of the International Law Association (ILA) have added several highlights to the upcoming ASIL Annual Meeting-ILA Biennial Conference.

The event, entitled “The Effectiveness of International Law,” will be held April 7-12, 2014, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Washington, DC, and include the presentation of ASIL’s 2014 Book Awards. For those unable to attend, a certain number of sessions will be streamed live.

Former Slovenian President Danilo Turk will deliver remarks on “International Law and Effectiveness in the Post Cold War Era” at the Gala Dinner on Friday, April 11, 8-10 pm. Turk joins previously announced speakers including Singapore Supreme Court Justice Sundaresh Menon andPresident Peter Tomka and Judges Xue Hanqin, Joan Donoghue,and Julia Sebutinde of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Additionally, late-breaking sessions on Syria (“Testing the Effectiveness of International Law”) and Ukraine (“Is International Law Effective? The Case of Russia and Ukraine”) will provide attendees with insights into the most current issues in international law.

Sessions that will be streamed live, for those who can’t attend this historic conference in person, include the Syria and Ukraine sessions, the Grotius Lecture by former UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Children and on Violence Against Women Radhika Coomaraswamy, “The Approach of Courts to Foreign Affairs and National Security,” “Autonomous Weaponry and Armed Conflict,” “Can International Law Keep Up With the Internet?,” and a luncheon honoring ICJ JudgesDonoghue, Sebutinde, and Xuewith remarks by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. At the Gala Dinner on Friday, April 11, the Society’s 2014 book award winners will be announced. Ryan Goodman (ASIL Academic Partner New York University School of Law) and Derek Jinks (University of Texas School of Law) will be presented with the ASIL Certificate of Merit for a preeminent contribution to creative scholarship for Socializing States: Promoting Human Rights through International Law(ASIL Publisher Partner Oxford University Press). The Certificate of Merit for high technical craftsmanship and utility to practicing lawyers and scholars will be awarded to Robert Kolb’s (ASIL Academic Partner University of Geneva School of Law) The International Court of Justice (ASIL Publisher Partner Hart Publishing). The Certificate of Merit in a specialized area of international law will be awarded to The Oxford Handbook of the History of International Law (ASIL Publishing Partner Oxford University Press), edited by Bardo Fassbender (Bundeswehr University Munich)and Anne Peters (University of Basel, Switzerland). Additionally, Goodman and Jinks will be featured at the session “On Socializing States: A Conversation with Ryan Goodman and Derek Jinks on Their Certificate of Merit Winning Book” at 9:00 am on Friday, April 11.
